Heavenly Orange Scones

These scones remind me so much of going home for Christmas!  They are a staple that my mom bakes every holiday.  She whipped up a big batch for our Christmas adventure to Michigan and even my 1 year old devours them.  I was thinking that this was a Barefoot Contessa recipe it is so good, but my mom said that it was passed down from a sweet woman from our church in St. Louis.  Today, I am passing it down to you…enjoy:)

4 c flour

1 c sugar

4 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1 c semi sweet mini morsels

1 c dried cranberries (optional)

1 Tsp grated orange peel

1 c (2 sticks) butter cut into pieces and softened

1 c buttermilk

3 large eggs, divided (2 eggs go in scones and last egg used for wash over scones)

1 Tbs milk

Icing:

1 tsp orange extract

1 Tbs milk

1/4 c powdered sugar

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease baking sheet.  Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in large bowl.  Cut butter into flour.  Add in morsels, cranberries (if you are using).  Combine buttermilk, 2 eggs in separate bowl.  Combine buttermilk mixture into flour mixture; mix until a sticky dough forms.  Do not over mix.  Using an ice cream scoop, place dough on cookie sheet.  Combine remaining egg and milk in small bowl.  Brush egg mixture over top of dough.  Place in oven for 12 minutes.  For icing: combine orange extract, milk and powdered sugar.  You want the mixture to be thin so if you need to add more milk to thin it out, do so.  Drizzle over cooled scones.
